Thursday Island
WW2 Light Infantry Battalion Soldiers Memorial
About The Project
A Torres Strait Island Special committee selected Liam Hardy to design and sculpt a World War 2 Light Infantry Battalion Soldier.
The Torres Strait Islander community has an important Australian history for those TSI men and Women who served, especially in WW2. No community in Australia offered a higher contribution in terms of population with the majority of all military-aged males serving during the war. The Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion was also unique because it was the only Indigenous Australian full battalion formed by the Australian Military.
Liam Travelled with the completed Statue for the installation and unveiling. Grateful to be part of an emotional and moving cultural event, Liam marks this occasion as a highlight in his career.
‘He Stands forever at his post, with his Sarpeye.’
Unveiled on the 10th November, 2018.
