Sculpting Innovative Workspaces
A Showcase of Sculpt Studios’ Bespoke Features for Microsoft Head Office (Australia)
About the project
Collaborating closely with MPA and Group GSA, Sculpt Studios was engaged to undertake the technical design, fabrication and installation of two bespoke features for the $42m head office fit-out for Microsoft in North Sydney.
The parametric timber walls were crafted using thousands of individual steam bent lengths of imported American White Oak. Each steam bent length of timber was attached via Sculpt Studio’s custom design methodology, right down to cladding the kitchen cabinets. The geological rock formations tell the story of Tasmanian Dolerite columns responding to the design brief of representing various environments of Australia. These walls were crafted of Stainless steel and hand-sculpted cement plaster.
Both these features were developed by Sculpt Studios using advanced digital modelling to match Microsoft’s uniquely Australian design concepts to reflect iconic landscapes. These walls are highly integrated into the interior architecture of this office fit-out and actively engage with Microsoft’s staff and their visitors on a daily basis. Sculpt Studio’s project planning overcame significant challenges in the installation of both these walls, such as developing a methodology of replicating large rock strata and timber facades while on the 28th level of an inner-city tower.
Microsoft is thrilled with its new Australian head office and this project has been featured in several leading design publications as a new benchmark for hybrid workplaces in Australia.
